Strange Quotes of the Day: Dietrich Bonhoeffer

bonhoeffer_01

“Cheap grace is the grace we bestow on ourselves. Cheap grace is the preaching of forgiveness without requiring repentance, baptism without church discipline, Communion without confession…. Cheap grace is grace without discipleship, grace without the cross, grace without Jesus Christ, living and incarnate.”

“When Christ calls a man, he bids him come and die.”

—The Cost of Discipleship

Dietrich Bonhoeffer was hanged on this day in 1945, at Flossenburg concentration camp, shortly before it’s liberation. His reported last words were “This is the end — for me the beginning of life.”

  1. I found out that there is a verb in Lating meaning “to hold silence”. It’s TACERE, which is the root of our words tacit and taciturn. The Romans thought of silence as an active thing rather than a passive thing.
